“Being married to a priest is definitely an exercise in sacrifice.” (3)

“My biggest thought was: thank God I'm home

I am curious to find how did you become an Orthodox woman and a matushka too. Could you share to us your spiritual experience?

I was born into a Roman Catholic family and baptized as an infant. When I was in high school, my parents became increasingly dissatisfied with the Catholic church and left to go to the Episcopal church (protestant). They were happy there and I attended because I didn't have any choice. When I went to college I was still attending the Episcopal church. I met my future husband (his story is more interesting) who convinced me that I had made a big mistake to leave the Catholic church. We attended the small Catholic church together but the mass was dreadful. It's hard to describe to you because I think you may not have the necessary background, but the Catholic church became mired for the most part in the culture of the 1960's in this country. The resulting liturgy is ugly when guitar music is playing! I used to say that the pain of attending mass would get me out of years of purgatory!

I transferred to a different college and in the meantime my future husband began a correspondence with a professor and his wife who had moved to another state. They had been looking for a conservative Catholic church and hadn't found one. Instead, they had found the Orthodox church. Over the course of the next few years he investigated the Orthodox church but felt that he just couldn't "become" Greek or Russian. After graduation he attended a small OCA church in Birmingham, Alabama. It was then that he knew that he wanted to become Orthodox. I visited this church with him a few weeks later when I traveled to see him. I wasn't particularly convinced. I look back now and am astounded by my stupidity! It wasn't until the next week when I was back home, attending the Episcopal church (I just couldn't stand the ugly modern Catholic liturgy anymore and was floundering around) that I realized that it (the Episcopal church) was spiritually empty. The liturgy was dead. I had seen "the real thing" the past week in Alabama and was just now realizing it.
From that moment I began studying to become Orthodox. Father and I married at the end of that summer. I was still attending college in another state and so did not move to be with him until Christmas. As soon as I did, we were both made official catechumens and received into the Orthodox church about 6 weeks later. Father could have done this earlier but wanted to wait for me. My biggest thought was "thank God I'm home." I had a lot of growing to do after that and I'm still a spiritual baby.

How many Orthodox families have you in your parish? And how do you/ your batiushka get the salary to support your family (from the state, from the community or does he have to work)?

Oh dear, I'm not the numbers person! As far as families, I'm going to guess about thirty? It's probably less than that and some of those "families" consist of single persons.

Since there are no state-supported churches in America, the individual parishes are responsible for paying their priests. Obviously, larger parishes can offer a higher salary and more benefits. We have made as little as $900 a month. Currently, by living in a small provided rectory we are able to live on Father's salary. This is the first time that has happened. Should we need to move, our income would have to increase as well and it would probably be necessary for him to find work. Sadly, many matushki in this country must work to support their families and are unable to be at home with their children. This was the case with us for 11 years (including seminary).

Do you practice Communion frequently for your children and for yourself?

Yes, we partake every week with some exceptions. If I'm ill and haven't fasted, of course I won't partake. I also will abstain from communion during menstruation.
I know this is not a universal experience, but it is what we have been blessed to do by our spiritual father. Frequent communion is common in the U.S.

Do the American Orthodox priests have theological studies to practice this ministry?

Yes, the OCA has three seminaries: St. Tikhon's in Pennsylvania, St. Vladimir's in New York and St. Herman's in Alaska. The Greek seminary is Holy Cross in Massachusetts. These four are the primary seminaries in this country. There are a few others associated with ROCOR etc. but I am not very familiar with them. My apologies. You will notice that all of these are concentrated in the northeast with the exception of St. Herman's. It would be very beneficial to have a seminary in the South or West.

“Your job, first of all, is to support him.”

On our blog, many readers are women who are to marry a theology graduate or student. They want to know more about what being a matushka is. So, in the end, please tell us something for them; how, in your opinion, should they see and face this ministry?

Being married to a priest is definitely an exercise in sacrifice. You will most likely not have very much money and will need to be able to keep a frugal house. You should be open to children. You will have a husband with a job that never stops; he will be called to the hospital during dinner. Your job, first of all, is to support him. Take care of the house, children etc., so that he is free to be a priest to his parishioners. Raise your children carefully (one should do this anyway!) because, fair or not, people will be watching them closely. Watch what you say. People will come to you for advice. Unless it is about something that is obviously in your realm, direct people to the priest. I have had people ask me about fasting guidelines etc. You should not be dispensing advice about spiritual matters. Be humble, remember that you are a lay-person, and remind people gently to ask their spiritual father. People accept this well.

On the other hand, while you will certainly sacrifice for the sake of your parish, you also have to be mindful to take care of your marriage. Sadly, so many clergy marriages dissolve. Encourage your husband to take a day (or even half a day) just for his family every week. Encourage him to take what vacation you can. He is a priest, but he is also human and has the same needs as any other man.

If there is tension in the house about something going on in the parish (this will happen, be assured) either because people are criticizing your husband or some other issue, make sure you talk together and don't hold in secrets. Try your best not to complain, but to quietly support him. If the parish is in uproar, then he needs a peaceful home more than ever.

One more thing: I mentioned earlier about raising your children well because people will be watching them. This is true, but don't forget that they are normal children and not endowed with special angelic powers! Don't fall into the trap of expecting perfection because you are afraid someone will criticize you about them. Do your best and treat them with love and understanding. Just as you may feel uncomfortable having all eyes on you, they will too, and will need a forgiving mother to come home to.

Matushka Anna, thank you for the love with which you have shared your experience. You have been very patient with us and you told us so many interesting things; it has been a real pleasure to talk to you!

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share some of my experience as a matushka in the United States. I know my own experience is so limited and this country is so vast - I hope I have not misrepresented anything in the course of this interview. Please forgive any inadequacies. I should make it clear that in a lot of cases I am giving advice that I don’t always follow!

It has been a pleasure for us, and also very useful, to learn so many things about your experience about being an orthodox in general in United States and especially a matushka. Maybe this interview will lead to some other connections between matushki/ presvyteras/ preotese and will teach us to see that Orthodoxy is beyond the nationality. We hope we’ll keep in touch in sharing things, in the love of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Thank you again!

“Being married to a priest is definitely an exercise in sacrifice.” (2)

“I've always wanted to be at home with my children”

How is being a full-time mother dealing with the idea of modern career woman? Do you feel like something is missing in your life?

I was working full-time until this past Christmas. Through some terrible dealings at work I lost my job. This was a blessing because it allowed me to be at home. I had been wanting to be at home for years and years but priests at missions in the U.S. are not paid very much so I was working to support us. After Christmas we were able to work on our house in order to sell it. The housing market has been very poor here so we were worried we would have a hard time. We moved in March and I've been able to be at home since Father is full-time now. Glory to God! We also sold our house last month. Again, glory to God!

I will admit that I have had some moments in which I felt bad because I was "just at home" now. Previously, I had been a rather important person at work (not in terms of my job title, but in terms of the difference I made) and it was harder than I was expecting to get used to. Occasionally I would feel inferior. I had to tell myself that I've always wanted to be at home with my children! Just because I'm at home now doesn't mean I'm any less intelligent or respectable. After working for thirteen years, I have had six months to get used to it. I also had to learn to keep an organized house! I had been home so little that Father had done more than half of the housework and almost all of the cooking. We were living upside down. He had also done all of the homeschooling and now I've taken all of that over as well. It has been a big adjustment, but I'm very happy. I don't feel like something is missing now. If I were at work, I would definitely feel like something were missing: me!

I really like your way of presenting serious matters colored with funny views. It’s really comforting! Let’s talk about your children’s education. In Romania homeschooling is not an option. Very few have heard of it. Please, tell us what is it and what are you doing with your kids in the program.

It's a shame that it's not an option in Romania. I know that that is the case in several other countries as well. Some parents have even had their children taken away from them for homeschooling.

Homeschooling is pretty much what it sounds like: education at home. In this country different states have different rules concerning homeschooling. In some states the parent must be a certified teacher. Others insist that the children be part of a formal homeschool group - many churches have them. The group may exist only as a formality (the children may not actually come together for any activities) or it may be an actual group with different parents sharing the teaching of different subjects, organized field trips, sports leagues etc. In some states there are virtually no rules at all. You just have to let your local school system know you're homeschooling and that's it. Likewise with standardized testing: some states require it, some don't.

The saying goes that there are as many ways of homeschooling as there are families! Some subscribe to a formal complete curriculum while others put it together from many sources.

We do the latter. This coming year we will have children in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th grades. The youngest learns his letters, numbers and colors with me as he feels like it. Little ones learn primarily through living. The older ones take phonics or grammar (according to age - we'll have all grammar this year), spelling, penmanship, math, science (starting in 2nd grade), history (starting in 3rd grade), Christian Studies (Father teaches that, thank Heavens!) and the older ones take Latin. We've let Latin go this past year, but I want to get it going again. Father must teach that one too. I think they need to start Spanish (because of the large number of Spanish-speaking people in this part of the country) but we're still discussing that.

The books come largely from different sources. We're still feeling our way - sometimes we'll use a book and decide we like it and sometimes not. Needless to say, they all read. I do assign reading, but mostly (especially for the younger ones) I let them read whatever they want. I want them to learn to love reading. I can fine-tune it later!

“It's hard to imagine living in an Orthodox country”

Tell us more about Orthodoxy in America and especially in south, where you are. Here, in Romania, we are used to the idea of an orthodox majority (practicing the faith or not), and I thing very often we don’t realize the advantage of living in an Orthodox country. Do you see it as an advantage?

There are a few areas of the country where a priest might be recognized as being Orthodox. In my personal experience, this has happened in Pennsylvania. On the other hand, there are quite a few Byzantine Catholics in the area too and their priests wear cassocks. I have had to ask before getting a blessing (this happened in a hospital where I worked). In the southern U.S. (the Diocese of the South extends from New Mexico all the way to the east coast and up to Virginia and Kentucky - a total of 14 states!), Orthodox churches are few and far between. A lot of Orthodox Christians must drive for at least an hour, sometimes two or more to get to a church. The largest churches are generally Greek and they tend to be found in metropolitan areas. OCA missions are usually small, although there are several larger established churches.

It's hard to imagine living in an Orthodox country! I suppose in this modern world it has its advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes "cradle Orthodox" don't realize what a treasure they have and I think that secularized citizens (baptized but not practicing) can fail to give the proper respect to the church. On the other hand, I can't imagine the wealth of churches that exist in Romania and other European countries! I think that overall, I'd prefer to live in an Orthodox country, but my experience is very limited.

You know that the practice of pilgrimage goes back into far antiquity, into the Old and New Testaments record themselves. In these days traveling is not so arduous, nor even so dangerous, so something of the sacrifice of those journeys has been lost to us. Did you visit - together with your family or with your laypeople - the saint orthodox places from the USA? I mean the saint relics of Saint John Maximovitch archbishop of San Francisco, the tomb of Saint Raphael of Brooklyn or the tomb of the blessed father Seraphim Rose?

I would love to travel to California to venerate the relics of St. John Maximovitch and Fr. Seraphim Rose, but San Francisco is about 2200 miles from here and Platina is 2400 miles! Given the restrictions of finance, time and opportunity, sometimes we have to take closer pilgrimages. For many Americans, the practice of pilgrimage is very important. Mercifully, there are many monasteries in this country. We have taken advantage of the opportunity when we could. There is a Greek monastery, Holy Protection of the Theotokos in White Haven, Pennsylvania that we consider our monastic home. Our spiritual father is there. We became acquainted with Holy Protection in addition to St. Nektarios Monastery in Roscoe, New York while at seminary at St. Tikhon’s (in fact, many people travel to St. Tikhon's to venerate St. Alexis Toth's relics.). We've also visited the Monastery of St. John Chrysostom in Wisconsin. We would like to take a trip to Texas to visit Holy Archangels' Monastery soon.

“Being married to a priest is definitely an exercise in sacrifice.” (1)

Praying with my feet” – a blog that got my attention by its name and a beautiful picture showing the lovely family of an Orthodox priest. The owner is matushka Anna, an open and charming person, who accepted to share with us some of her experience in being a matushka.

“I am just an ordinary person”

Matushka Anna, you are the homeschooling mother of five small children, a recently retired nurse and the wife of on Orthodox priest in the south of the United States. What means to you being a matushka? Is there a specific, a different life style?

Being a matushka in this country... I think that the answer would be different depending on the jurisdiction (mostly Orthodox Church in America, Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, Antiochian Orthodox with some Russian Orthodox, Romanian Orthodox, Serbian Orthodox etc.) and the part of the country. In the South, most of the churches are smaller and are missions. In the Northeast there are many more Orthodox Christians and the churches may be quite large. It is this way across the entire country - a checkerboard. I can only answer from my own experiences, of course. I am in the OCA (Orthodox Church in America) living in a very small town in southern Mississippi. There are very few Orthodox Christians here and most people have never heard of the Orthodox Church. They certainly have not heard of the word "matushka"! So, as far as the world outside my church is concerned, I am just an ordinary person. In my church, I don't have an official position, I'm not 'assigned' to this parish, I'm not an elected official (in fact, I'm ineligible), yet I am set apart. I know that, for many, the matushka is someone who is supposed to be a paragon of virtues, the role-model of Orthodoxy (next to the priest). For others, the idea of calling someone "matushka" is difficult. It is like this when you have a mixed group of converts and cradle-Orthodox. I attend a very nice church; the people are very kind and loving. I know that I am watched - I have to be very careful not to give scandal. I don't mind this. I try to live modestly, frugally, piously. I am not a perfect person by any means, but it is important that I try hard.

You have a blog, named Praying With My Feet. Why this name?

Well, the best way to answer that would be to quote from my blog: "When my oldest three children were very small (i.e.-three, two and infant), I complained to my spiritual father that I seemed to spend more time outside the church than inside: walking/nursing the baby, removing the loud/crying toddler(s) etc. He told me that I was 'praying with my feet'. I have had many, many occasions to remember his words with gratitude."

In everything I do, I need to remember to "pray with my feet" or hands or whatever. The life of a mother of little children is busy. Sometimes there doesn't seem to be much time to pray. But I can make my actions prayers.

How is an ordinary day for you?

Oh my! Well, in a lot of ways it is very ordinary. I usually wake up next to my 3 year old who has probably climbed in bed with me. I try to go for a walk very early for exercise. Everyone gets up and dressed and we have breakfast. Some children have morning duties like feeding the cats and sorting laundry. I try to get homeschool going as soon as possible because it becomes more difficult as the day goes on. This usually takes all morning although some children are done sooner. If possible, I try to get some house work done during this time too. It doesn't always happen.

Around 12 we have lunch, usually sandwiches because that's what everyone likes and because I tend not to cook lunch and dinner. By 1:30 everyone is taking a rest. The youngest takes a nap but the older children are free to lie in bed and read. The girls (because they have their own room) may quietly work on a puzzle or do some other quiet activity. I NEED them to have an hour rest because we all need a break from the noise and commotion! Especially me!

In the afternoon we do various things. Every Monday we go to the library. Depending on the weather, they may play outside, play in the sprinkler, play on the porch, whatever. They are very creative and I don't have the habit of telling them how to play. They also have various chores to complete during the day and they may have to finish some homeschooling if we did something else during the morning. A week or so ago we took them to the planetarium and this morning I took them to the train station. I also try to get any house work done for the day (I have a weekly schedule). By late afternoon I will be getting dinner ready or getting everyone ready for vespers (which we do every Wednesday and Saturday). After dinner the girls are responsible for clearing the table and doing the dinner dishes. They may watch a DVD in the evening or just play. Usually I have at least one or two children hidden in various places reading. We may also play a game together as a family. Father also likes to read aloud. After washing up they're supposed to be in bed with a book by 8:30 and lights off around 9. Father and I will spend the time after that talking or reading together. Obviously, Sunday and feastdays are different as we'll be at church.

About the prayer life, Father and I do our rules separately, he usually in the morning, I usually at night. We have a family icon "corner" - due to lack of space it's on the wall by the dining table. The children also have icon corners in their rooms with the icons being placed at child-level. The older ones have their own rules and do them on their own. Father had started walking to church, taking some of the children with him, in the evening to say a quick vespers. That's been nice. Our oldest has gone with him to the church very early many times to say matins with him. She's learning how to chant.

„Tata m-a pedepsit o singură dată“

Şi atunci mama mi-a răspuns: „Asta-i hârtie care nu-i a ta.

Tata m-a pedepsit o singură dată.
